Las Vegas or Wendy's

So my mife was recently in Las Vegas for a convention, no not the porn convention, but she did run into Jenna Jameson at a club at the Mandalay Bay. One of the days, she and her co-workers decided to go to the newest restaurant in the Mandalay Bay for lunch. One of the party order a burger and fries and this picture is what they got. It reminded me so much of that Wendy's commercial with the guy eating the small $2.99 burger I had to post, plus there is a beer in the picture.
I don't know about you, but if they would have delivered this to me, I would have stabbed the waitresses eye out with that toothpick in the burger. Yes, that toothpick, the one that is almost as big as the burger.

What is the Perfect Food?

...with beer, that is?

Back from lunch. Georgetown Brewery's Chopper something something and a basket of tots, the perfect combination.

Thant's my vote

I'm a sucker for peer pressure.

Dicko and the Goat Girl told me about this little endeavor over beers on Friday and invited me to join. I mulled it over on the weekend along with a lot of booze and decided my liver would forgive me when it's all over. Thanks for letting me join your elite drinking team.

The Elusive Foreign Extra

The 365 beer competition has got me thinking about the various brews my palate has enjoyed in the forseeable past, and the one that kept coming to mind but sadly eludes us here in the US is the Guinness Foreign Extra. "I've had that before", you think to yourself. But unless you've been in Asia, Africa, Ireland or some parts of the Carribbean lately, I beg to differ. See, unlike the Guinness Extra Stout, which I don't really like that much, the Guinness Foreign
Extra has a much smoother, chocolatier edge to it. Think of it as the Barry White of beers. As an Irish person, I've always been embarrassed that I don't like Guinness. It's sacrilege or something. But on my recent trip to Ireland, I nearly peed myself with joy at the Guinness factory in Dublin when I found a Guinness that I actually like. And you know what? They don't freaking sell it in the US!! WTF?!!! Isn't like this country supposed to be the land of choice. What other country has 40 different types of cereal when they go to the supermarket? So why does Asia and Africa get to enjoy Foreign Extra when we can't?! It's a travesty I say! As such, my beloved Canadian and I brought back a few bottles of the precious stuff, which we are planning to open on an extremely special occasion. Our recent anniversary wasn't even in the running for an occasion special enough.

So here's my question to you all: If you only had one bottle left of your favorite beer and knew that you couldn't get it again until you left the continent, what occasion would be special enough to get you to open it?

My Snuffleupagus

Han Solo is hard to beat...

...but it might be a good time to have a beer with Jack Burton in the Pork Chop Express.
It would be sweet to have this conversation with him. Just when you think you're too drunk and can't have another beer, you ask if you should have another one.
Him: "You know what ol Jack Burton always says?"
Me: "Who?" because I am so drunk.
Him: "Jack Burton, ME! Ol Jack Burton always says, What the Hell."

I Live in Beertopia!

I was recently made aware of the fact that Portland, Oregon is the greatest city in the U.S. for beer drinking. Not only does P-town have the most micro-breweries of any city in the world, but the beer selection at the bars and stores is amazing. After Dicko's post about his local Fred Meyer's having over 130 different beers I decided to check my local Freddy's. And by my count (with my beautiful girlfriend's help) I came up with something in the neighborhood of 230 different beers. The next morning I was at the Plaid Pantry down the street from my apartment and noticed that they had dedicated seven coolers to their beer selection. I lost count somewhere in the 120 range. So if any of you are having problems finding some beers, I suggest you come on down to Beertopia and visit me. We'll go get drunk.
And I would most like to have a beer with Champ Kind, sports anchor for the Channel 2 news team. Whammy!

Widmer

I love messages under bottlecaps. In college it was Lucky Lager stubbies with little puzzles under the caps. There has been a few others since then, but drinking tends to alter ones memories, so lets skip to now.

Widmer Hefeweizen is probably the only Hefe worth drinking available at most stores. Pyramid, not the same. Henrys, I actually hate this beer. Firehouse, meh, okay. There are a few out there (help me here if you can) but for the most part it is Widmer only. And on top of that tangent, and getting back to the subject at hand, Widmer has Prosts on the underside of their caps.

Until now I thought that the marketing guys for Widmer and Kurt & Rob must be awesome beer drinking guys my age. And I just found that the marketing guys are in fact the general public, so actually are awesome beer drinking guys my age that log in to the site and submit Prosts. Submit your own and vote for the newest winner, or read the list of past winners.

Plan for your birthday

I have just under 5 months to plan what beer I will choose to be my 365 birthday beer. And although this quest may be impossible, I have in fact found...a quest. Looking up Arrogant Bastard Ale and finding it's site Stone Brewing I found what might possibly be the coolest thing I have found so far in my online search for beers. (which is saying something because I am continuing to be amazed by the number of beers and amount of beer information available from some of these kick ass breweries. Apparently I should have a beer cellar, because I guess cellars aren't just for wine anymore.)

Stone Brewing out of CA has a beer called Vertical Epic that is being brewed 1 year and 1 month and 1 day from the last year's release, starting back on 02-02-02. For those of you that have known me since forever, you know that I have long held the belief that if I was born one day later on 7-7-77 I would have been bestowed with magical powers. Alas, I was born on 7-6-77 and am cursed with the inability to even fucking whistle.

And now with my 30th birthday coming up this July, I find that a beer will be released on 07-07-07. And the Epic beer line is so successful (and far away in California) that I am most likely not destined to enjoy this beer for my birthday. That and the fact that they recommend you taste the various beers after months or years in storage, mean that my quest for the perfect 365 birthday beer is still mostly likely without a holy grail. But I will find one. And it shall be mine.

edit:Also, nice to see the new member. Here is a calender, but I am all for something easier to use specifically for beer tracking purposes. Google calender

Hi fellas. Since Dicko has shit for manners (and, let's face it, that IS why we like him), I'll introduce myself.

Name: Glam, or you can call me Michelle, or better yet, Mistress. And you - you know who you are - you can call me Mommy.

Personal: West Seattle native. One kid in high school. Work in an office. UO(regon) grad, BS in Fine Arts. (You can stop laughing now.)

Connection to 365Beers: I've been pounding pints with Dicko for the last year. Thanks again for Friday. Sorry I had to cut out early.

Beer Drinker: Yes

Other Spirits Enjoyed: Gin-based tortures

Up for the task of 365Beers?: You haven't met me, have you?

Why do I think I can do it?: I love to wrap my hand around a long neck and enjoy some good, frothy head. (Okay, a friend of mine suggested I say that.)

What do I think will be by greatest challenge: Anything cheap and watery.

Contributions to 365Beers blog: I like the idea of coding in a calendar so I'm working on finding one that may work for us. Looking forward to writing more on, or soon after, the 16th.

Contact: glamorgoat at gmail dot com

Photo of me. And beer.

Update: Oh shit, I almost forgot the most important piece of information...

Who would I most like to drink a beer with?: John Belushi

Not the first, not the last

http://365beer.blogspot.com/ After mistyping our site, I found another who tried the 365 challenge. Not sure if he succeeded since he stopped blogging end of 05. I vow to see this through. at least 365 in a year, guaranteed.
http://www.herestobeer.com/ Also found another good site from Budweiser. How to pour, beer appreciation, etc. And a question to ponder. If you could have a beer with anyone, who would it be?

For me, the first thing that popped into my head was Han Solo, captain of the Millenium Falcon.

And as I work on the list of beers (speaking of list, Nate reports his local Fred Meyers has 230 different beers. Holy shit.) I found that Full Sail in Hood River has a LTD beer that they change a couple times a year, and a Brewmaster's reserve that the head brewmaster changes every 10 weeks. Looks like Nate is right about being able to probably get to 365 without even leaving Portland...

Nate, I also found a good beer for day or so after your birthday. BJ's in Jantzen Beach should have a seasonal only available til end of February and there is a seasonal at Full Sail right now too that we could try in Hood River if you are up for a small trip. Maybe meet Garrett and head to the outlets or even go Skiing.

Olympic Drug's Selection

Olympic Drug here in Longview has always been my favorite place to mail stuff because the line is always shorter than the post office and the clerks there seem to be way nicer than the normal post office clerks. Plus, walking to the post office window always takes me either down the beer isle, or down the magazine isle for a brief glance at what great "articles" are on the cover of playboy and maxim this month.

The beer isle isn't huge, but what it lacks in quantity, it more than makes up for in quality. They allow you buy beer by the bottle, and mix and match sixpacks for a discount when you buy 12 or more beers. And they have beers you can't get at other stores. Want the beers brewed in nearby Chehalis that only local restaurants carry? They have them. (I just scored a 12 beer multi-pack of Dicks Beer) Want a pint of some little known stout that is over 10% alcohol. They have it...in two flavors. Want organic beer? They have it. I have a feeling Olympic drug is going to be my savior on those days when I am out of options later in the year. Plus they have a cooler with some of the beers in there, unlike stupid Trader Joes.

Trader Joe's beer

Trader Joe's is a fantastic store to buy strange and unusually yummy organic foods, aside from the fact that one must deal with the local hippies who accidentally brush up against you and then one must cleanse oneself in a large vat of boiling water immediately afterwards. (For emergency purposes, the stores usually have handi-wipes available back by the food and coffee taste testing area and a very large container of handi-wipes in front of the store by the carts. Nate, since you live near a couple Trader Joe's now you can steal a bunch of those and stock up for later use).

Upon first glance you would think that Trader Joe's beer selection is good. Several imports from Belgium, Holland and Germany and lots of domestic micros. Excellent and tasty selections like Duvel, 3 Horses Lager, New Belgium and plenty of Mac's. Pounders, pints, litres, bottles, cans, etc. One minor problem. All their beers are warm. Not a one six pack or litre bottle with the fancy cork is chilled. In stark opposition to your run-of-the-mill local grocery outlet like Fred Meyer or Safeway where EVERY six or twelve pack is chilled to perfect consumption temperature.

Pull your collective heads out of your asses, Trader Joe's and stick you beer where it counts.

NOSE

If you haven't seen the original blog, make sure you check it out today. Best post ever from Williamson with the SNL short "Dick in a Box." It would be no exageration to say that this is the best thing I have seen on the internet since Y2KHAI. Lazy Sunday from Nate's Ipod deserves a spot on here too., although it's no match for Dick in a box...

And nice call on the portland brew lists. I would post more links but the original 365 site list pretty much has it covered for now. Willie and I are too busy pre-funking for 365 and watching Dick in a box and breakdancing babies on youtube to list beers tonight.

Portland Brews on Tap

I recently discovered a Portland Beer blog and left them a question as to which bars in Portland had the most beers on tap. They gave me a couple of suggestions that included the Dublin Pub, Old Chicago's and Henry's Tavern. Old Chicago and Henry's each had their beer lists posted which you can see by clicking here (OC) and here (HT).
Something tells me that I will be spending a lot of time at these places in the near future. Thanks for the tip PDX beer!

One of my favorite quotes

After outmaneuvering Rommel, Patton said, "Rommel, you magnificent bastard. I read your book." Point being, preparations are essential for success. That said, its funny that Gus was looking at webpages searching for different beers and I spent the time counting all of the different types of beers at my local Fred Meyer store. 132 if you can believe it... I decided to make myself a mixed bag six pack to wet my whistle (To the horror of the lady at the check stand). I thought this old lady was going to have a heart attack, I couldn't believe it. Since I hadn't been drinking yet, I was fast on my feet and told her that I only used beers that were the same price as the beer box I had brought up to the register. Crisis diverted, she said, "Oh well, then I guess I can just ring up the box and its ok." THANK GOD! We didn't have to change her Depends. Stupid Bitch, the box I used was the cheapest of the six beers and you completely fucked up the inventory. I love taking advantage of old people.
